Cathleen Naundorf and the house of Chanel

A visit to the studio of a fine art photographer, specialising in fashion photography!

On Wednesday 5 May, we had the pleasure of meeting the fine art photographer Cathleen Naundorf, who warmly welcomed us into her studio on rue Réaumur and showed us some of her work. Her passion was evident as she told us about her career as a photographer. She started out working with GEO magazine and other newspapers, on a range of different subjects. Through various encounters, she made her way into the world of fashion, where her unique, artistic vision for staging fashion photos caught the attention of all the designers. She would choose unusual or mythical scenes of Parisian life to give the models a dreamlike or theatrical dimension, revealing a glimpse of their emotion, their spirit, and thus enhancing the clothes they were wearing.
She works with old analogue cameras, modelling textures and tones in a very pictorial way, creating photos that are like paintings. This particular technique and her timeless style make her an artist with a unique aesthetic vision.
Her work has been published by Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, her photographs have been exhibited in London, New York and Palm Beach, and can be found in the collections of the Musée Rodin. We’re hoping a major gallery will finally exhibit them in Paris! In 2018, in collaboration with the House of Chanel, she published a beautiful book showcasing more than 30 Haute Couture creations and celebrating her work for Chanel over the last 20 years.
Cathleen Naundorf offers visits of her studio on rue Réaumur to small groups of 5 or 6 people, on reservation. In the meantime, you can visit her website:
This visit was in preparation for the another outing we wanted to organise for our friends in the “Fashion World” group, at the Palais Galliera for the “Gabrielle Chanel” exhibition. But unfortunately, the current public health measures do not allow group visits! And as we are not sure that we will be able to go as a group before the exhibition ends on 18 July, we have to content ourselves with encouraging you to go alone. Make sure to reserve the day and time of your visit online!

Wishing you all a wonderful summer and we hope to see you back again in September for new visits and exhibitions.
